In the last one month, Kisumu security team have seized five firearms from thugs in a bid to fight the crime rate in the lakeside city.

Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko said the five arms included 3 AK 47 and 2 pistols alongside a  magazine.

Ouko said 42 suspects are detained on various accounts of crime and most of them have been arraigned in court to answer to criminal charges.

She noted that the county security team is up to the task of dealing ruthlessly with criminals and assured the public of intensified patrols.

“There are things we do that are not in the public domain, we don’t rest,” she said.

Speaking during a public baraza on the runaway insecurity in Kisumu East, Ouko said 28 motorbikes were also detained during the same period.

She said most thugs who attack at night always use motorbikes to commit crime and vanish in the darkness.

The Commissioner appealed to the public to help in the identification of the owners of the motorbikes being detained at various police stations in the county.

“We have the motorbikes, nobody is turning up to claim them for fear of arrests, we now want to pursue the owners,” she said.

Ouko spoke as two watchmen were killed on Monday night at the National Housing Corporation units in Kanyawar area along Kisumu Kakamega road.

According to witnesses, the two guards were ambushed and killed by the unknown thugs before they ransacked the vehicles at the parking yard and stole an assortment of things.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o asked the security agencies to work round the clock to bring the level of insecurity in the city to its lowest.

Nyong’o said he was concerned that gangs have continued to cause havoc in areas of Kisumu despite his earlier appeal to have the matter addressed.

“I am deeply disturbed by the state of insecurity in parts of the county. I am appealing to the Ministry of Interior to move with speed and save the situation because I know they have the capacity,” said Governor Nyong’o.

The Governor announced that he will convene a meeting with the county security team ahead of Kenya Inter County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) games that starts from 16th this month in Kisumu.

While hailing the security baraza held by the County Commissioner, Nyong’o promised to work on the issues addressed by the residents and fell on his docket as the county boss.

“I have instructed the relevant departments to ensure faulty street and flood lights in crime prone areas were restored with immediate effect,” he said.
