Government to work with CoG as it bids to host AFCON 2027

The National Government will work closely with the Council of Governors (CoG) as it bids to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba said Kenya is ready to host the Continental event and announced to have the tournament played across the country.

“I want to assure the Governor that as we prepare the bid for Kenya to host AFCON 2027, we want to do it with CoG,” he said.

Namwamba said the idea is to host AFCON in a manner that reflects the face of Kenya.

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday when he officially opened a week-long 9th edition of Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association KICOSCA), the CS said plans are underway to ensure every part of the country feels AFCON.

“AFCON games will have to be played here in Kisumu, Kakemega and Mombasa, Meru to truly reflect the face of Kenya in the hosting of those games,” he said.

Namwamba called for proper development of sports facilities across the country to be able to host the event.

He said CoG will be key in the development of such facilities at the county level.

“I want to appreciate the county governments for their participation and involvement of the corporate sector in the development of sports,” he said.

The CS promised to revitalize sports in the country noting that his ministry has set very ambitious programs aimed at uplifting the sector.

“You know the Kenya Kwanza Government has placed a premium on the value of sports and that is why I engaged FIFA to work out an arrangement that led to the lifting of the suspension of Kenya from FIFA,” he said.

He further announced a partnership between his ministry and the world athletics to defeat the culture of doping, to make Kenya retain its space as a power house in athletics.
