Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda has kicked off an ambitious program to nurture talents at the grassroots level.
Through his office, Senator Ojienda has organized a football tournament in all the seven sub counties.
Robert Ojienda, who is head of sports in the senator’s office said the senator identified a gap in nurturing talents especially among young people and plugged into it.
Robert said sports is a good way of engaging the youth as a way of drifting them away from engaging in criminal activities.
He said the tournament will culminate with finals at the Moi stadium in Kisumu on 30th this month.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Robert said more activities are lined up for the youth in Kisumu including and not limited to environmental conservation, which includes tree planting.
Federation of Kenya Football Kisumu West branch chairman Nicholas Ogonyo hailed the program noting that grassroots football has been neglected for so long.
Ogonyo said there is an abundant talent at the grassroots level but leaders have failed to utilize them.
He hailed Senator Ojienda for his initiative noting that most young players are undergoing difficulties in their effort to capture national attention.
